Penelope Cruz Sanchez
Penelope Cruz Sanchez was born in Madrid
to Eduardo Cruz, a retailer, and Encarna Sanchez, a hairdresser. She was an
obsessive performer when she was a kid and often reenacted TV commercials for
family amusement. But she chose to focus her attention on dancing. After
studying ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued
her training under a series of prominent dancers. She realized her passion at
the age of 15 when she defeated more than 300 girls in an audition for an
agency for talents. She was offered roles on Spanish television and music
videos. This contract led to many more roles, opening the doors to a successful
career on the world of big screens. Cruz made her movie debut in The Greek
Labyrinth (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth) She then made a brief appearance in the
Timothy Dalton thriller Framed (1992). Her final film, Belle Epoque (1992) was
an Oscar-winning film where she played one of the four sisters trying to win
the affection of a handsome deserter army soldier. The film was awarded many
Goyas, Spanish equivalent of Academy Awards. Cruz continued to add more films
to her resume, increasing by three or four per year. Soon Cruz was the most
sought-after actress in Spanish cinema. Live Flesh (1997) (Live Flesh) offered
her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (who
would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the
lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Open Your Eyes (1997), a
huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck
changed completely in 1998, when the film-industry comedy La Nina De Tus Ojos
(1998) won her the title of Best Actress Goya. Cruz has made a few other
appearances in English-language films but her biggest international success was
Almodovar's All About My Mother (1999) in which she played a sexy but very
well-meaning nun. Cruz found herself extremely sought-after across both sides
of the Atlantic as her film received numerous awards and accolades. Her next major
project was Woman on Top (2000) which is an American comedy about a chef who
has a dazzling culinary talent and a serious case of motion sickness. While in
