Pom Klementieff was the daughter of an Korean mother, and an American-Russian father. Her father was consul in Quebec City, Canada. Eugene Klementieff was her grandfather. Her parents chose the name "Pom" because it's similar in pronunciation to the Korean words for "spring" as well as "tiger". Klementieff was an American citizen for a year. Her family traveled extensively as a result of her father's work. After the move to France, Klementieff resided in Japan. Klementieff lost her father to cancer at age five. Her mother was also diagnosed with schizophrenia. Klementieff was raised in France by her paternal uncle and aunt. Her uncle, whom she described as "like [her] father" died when she was 18 years old. Klementieff's older brother who committed suicide years later, was also her aunt. Following the death of her uncle, Klementieff went to law school for a short time to please her aunt. However, she did not feel that the field was attractive to her. She also worked as an waitress in France and a saleswoman. In the Cours Florent drama academy in Paris the actress began her journey into acting at the age of 19. It was only two months into her studies when she won an acting contest which gave her two years of class with the best teachers at the school. Her first acting gig professionally was the French independent film Apres lui (2007), acting as the stepdaughter in the film of the main character, played by Catherine Deneuve. The production of the film took three days. In one scene, Klementieff was to help push someone down a set of stairs but accidentally fell down the stairs herself as did director Gael Morel kept that shot in the final film. Loup (2009) which is an French film that focuses on the Siberian reindeer herders, was her first significant role. Klementieff filmed for hours at an isolated camp away from the nearest village. The temperature plummeted to below zero during filming.
