Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay was on the 24th day of August 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay learned to love art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's model of that art can be an instrument for activism. DuVernay had her mother who was socially conscious and taught her to use the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay lived in Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she was able to spend summers with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma and decided to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. While she was still in school, DuVernay began to consider producing for the broadcast media. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay was tasked to monitor and investigate the residence of an individual Jury member. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalism, and shifted into the publicity business. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a publicist in the young age of a studio. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
